Competitive Courses Evening

At the start of May, Beauchamp City Sixth Form hosted its annual Competitive Courses Evening.

The event is designed to provide students – and parents – with important information that allows them to facilitate their future aspirations and secure places at prestigious universities.

Around 200 people were in attendance as the Sixth Form welcomed the University of Leicester, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham, the University of Oxford and a charity organisation called The Elephant Group.

Principal James McKenna opened proceedings before handing over to Luke Maw from the University of Oxford, who delivered a keynote speech entitled ‘What do Prestigious Universities want and how to write a winning personal statement.’

The attending universities then hosted a series of breakout sessions, giving prospective students a flavour of life at a top university. There was a focus on Engineering, Economics & Psychology, Medicine and the admissions process for Oxbridge.

Jayne Talent of The Elephant Group – a headteacher-led charity committed to providing all students with fair access to top universities – then delivered the second keynote speech - Maximise Your Talent - Be Aspirational – before attendees were given the opportunity to pose questions to members of the panel.

On the event, Ryan Pemberton – part of Beauchamp City’s Senior Leadership Team – said: "I'm not aware of another post 16 school in Leicestershire that runs an event like The Competitive Courses Evening.

“The opportunity to speak directly to prestigious universities is invaluable."
